What does it mean to you?
What does Memorial Day mean to you?
Memorial Day is a day set aside to honor and remember our fallen military who have paid the ultimate price. They gave their lives for people they had never met, yet they did know them, as fellow Americans. They gave their lives so we as Americans would have our freedoms. Freedom to assemble, freedom to speak, freedom to teach, freedom to live the way we choose. They may not have agreed with their fellow Americans on many issues but they did agree that freedom is worth the cost for all.
They Gave Their Lives for Freedom
They gave, I say they gave their lives because the vast majority of our military who are being honored and remembered chose someone else’s life over their own, whether they enlisted or were drafted. In the heat of the battle, bombs going off, land mines exploding, surrounded by the smell of death, they chose to protect their fellow soldiers, they chose to protect their fellow Americans.
During training exercises also, we have lost many military lives due to the dangers involved. These deaths, even though they are not combat related are just as honorable. These men and women knew that someday they might be called upon to pay the ultimate price for our freedom. These men and women trained as if that time could be tomorrow, some never saw tomorrow.
The Ones who Made it Home
Let us not forget the military who made it home, the ones who also made it through training where a death or deaths occurred. These men and women will always remember, some do not want to, some try to block it out, but it is always there. Memorial Day for some is not just one day a year, for some it is everyday. So if you know someone who made it home, stop and just say thank you.
Yes this is a day to honor and remember our fallen heroes, we should also remember the ones who were there when their buddy , their friend or their teammate lost their life. Again folks, for the ones who made it home with the memories of death, Memorial Day is not just one day a year, it is everyday.
Freedom is a Gift that is not Free
Today as we gather together to enjoy time with our family and friends, stop, and remember why we have the ability to do so, the privilege to do so. Freedom is a gift from God and our military. This gift to us from them may be free to receive, but the cost for God and our Military to give this to us has no way to be measured.
God bless the United States of America and all of our heroes and their families.
